25 - INTEGRITY...NO MASKS

1 Thessalonians 2v5

5 You know we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed—God is our witness.

No pretense, no hidden agendas, no ulterior motives, no butter, syrup or ‘schmoojg’ - just honest dealing, straight talk and genuinely sincere relationships. Employees around the world in any culture, any sector, any industry all want pretty much the same thing – to be led, supported, directed, trained, challenged and even disciplined my leaders and managers of integrity, consistency and honor. A lack of trust and confidence in our own manager or leaders is one of the primary reasons why good people leave organizations. Worse still is broken trust, two-faced or contradictory behavior, betrayed confidences or manipulation of others for the sake of political or other business or personal agendas.

While at the same time developing organizational and political savvy, as leaders and managers, we need to resist the temptation to wear masks in order to achieve less-than-honorable objectives. While respect by others is nice, and it’s very existence can be a foundation stone to build great, longer-term results, ultimately it’s what God knows about our hearts and our motives that matters. At the end of the day, at the end of our careers and at the conclusion of our lives, the only thing that will matter is what God thinks. If, when we lead and manage, what God thinks (and approves of) is what others see and believe in us is the same…what rejoicing there will be in heaven and even on earth at this witness of our lives.

PRAYER ACTION

Lord, may it be so that when people look into my eyes, when they are on the receiving end of my direct approach, that they will look through those windows to my soul and see light, truth and integrity and know they can count on me to be whatever You and they need me to be. But also strengthen me to not compromise on the truth and the right and the good - and to discover wisdom to do things in a better way than the world does them.

"Leadership is not magnetic personality that can just as well be a glib tongue. It is not ‘making friends and influencing people’; that is flattery. Leadership is lifting a person's vision to higher sights, the raising of a person's performance to a higher standard, the building of a personality beyond its normal limitations (‘authentically and with integrity’ – author’s addition)." (Peter F. Drucker)
