22 - CHECK YOUR MOTIVES PULSE

Updated: Aug 23

1 Thessalonians 2v3b

3 For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure motives, nor are we trying to trick you.

Company politics is a reality and even a necessary ‘evil’ sometimes - and a mature manager with high potential and ‘political’ savvy accepts this reality and must learn to ‘play’ in that arena wisely, courageously and righteously (the ‘non-self’ version, of course).  But there is nothing our staff or colleagues will lose respect for, and damage trust more, than a leader-manager who speaks with a ‘forked tongue’ – or when they discover that they have been ‘used’ to achieve a private agenda – or one that hurts their own longer-term career prospects.

The organizational silos game we play can sometimes breed conflicting and contradictory motives, raises up barriers and fosters unhealthy internal competition – complete with a win-lose culture that is extraordinarily unhealthy and unwholesome.  This is especially true in command-and-control cultures with an almost numbers-driven blind obsession.

The world around us is crying out – at work and everywhere else – for the truth demonstrated by words IN deeds.  Our people need to know that our appeal, our exhorting them and our commitment to them is for their good, their growth and ultimately their wellbeing – for their wholeness, their ‘shalom’ (OT, ‘sozo’ NT).  And this way of working and leading and managing is still ‘smart business’.  When people feel authentically and truly committed to and believed in, they become engaged like never before.

PRAYER ACTION

Lord, help me forgive those who have used me, manipulated me or deceived me.  But first, forgive me as I forgive those who have trespassed against me.  I may not be able to completely forget or easily trust them in future but may the same never be said by others about me.  Give me grace and wisdom to repair and restore and heal relationships wherever possible.

“Leadership is lifting a person’s vision to high sights, the raising of a person’s performance to a higher standard, the building of a personality beyond its normal limitations.”

(Peter Drucker)
